“The Tea Party Movement and American Populism: Historical and Contemporary Contexts”

The event is open to the public, without entry fee, and will be presented in English language.

In the summer of 2009, the Tea Parties mobilized loud and angry opposition to the Obama administration’s health care reform. Since that time, the Tea Party movement has set the agenda of the Republican Party and has been the focus of national political debate. What has been missing from much of the media coverage is an understanding of the historical roots of the Tea Party phenomenon, which is most often described as part of the Populist tradition in America.
In this talk, Prof. Postel will discuss historical Populism of the late nineteenth century, and why the historical roots of the Tea Parties are not in Populism but in the conservative politics of Cold War. He will also discuss how and why those politics have re-emerged with such force within the present crisis of American and globa l political economy.
Dr. Charles Postel is an associate professor of history at San Francisco State University. He earned his PhD in history at University of California, Berkeley. His book The Populist Vision (Oxford 2007) won the Frederick Jackson Turner Award from the Organization of American Historians and the Bancroft Prize, two of the most prestigious awards in the historical profession in the United States.

Im Sommer 2009 mobilisierten sich die Tea Partys als Opposition, gegen die von der Regierung Obama geplante Gesundheitsreform. Seit dieser Zeit beeinflusst die Tea Party Bewegung die Agenda der Republikanischen Partei und steht im Fokus der nationalen politischen Debatte. Was jedoch fehlt in der Medienberichterstattung ist das Verständnis der historischen Wurzeln des Tea Party Phänomens, welches oftmals als Teil der populistischen Tradition der USA beschrieben wird.
In seinem Vortrag wird Prof. Postel den historischen Populismus des späten 19. Jahrhunderts diskutieren und darauf eingehen, warum die historischen Wurzeln der Tea Partys nicht im Populismus, sondern in der konservativen Politik des Kalten Krieges liegen. Außerdem wird er darstellen, wie und warum sich diese Politik in der aktuellen amerikanischen- sowie weltweiten Krise re-etabliert hat.
Dr. Charles Postel ist Dozent für Geschichte an der San Francisco State University. Er erhielt seinen Ph.D. in Geschichte an der University of California in Berkeley.
