In 1781, the glorious infantry regiment Royal Deux-Ponts played a decisive role when George Washington eked out the independence of the USA in the siege and battle of Yorktown (Virginia).
But who knows that the volunteers of this legendary regiment – still considered unsung heroes of the American Revolution – had been recruited in Homburg? Who knows that this former fortress city has been built under the domination of the French King Louis XIV. who gave Louisana its name and that numerous houses of the Old Town had been constructed at the same time when the Original 13 entered Pennsylvania?
And who knows that Homburgs town hall became famous in April 1945 as frontispiece of the New York Times Magazine? But these are only some traces amongst lot s of others which people from Homburg left in the USA – and Americans left in todays Saarpfalz County.
On Thursday, May 13th, 2010 an extraordinary discovery tour invites you to explore these and many more traces on the occasion of a guided walkabout through Homburgs Old Town – along with amazing insight and a scenic outlook.
You will be surprised at the density of American Traces and hidden corners where you will learn a lot of fascinating stories behind historical claddings. And why not combining this walkabout with visiting the Sternenmarkt – a special Christmas Market with baroque ambiance?
The discovery tour American Traces in Homburg will be held in English. Due to organizational reasons the number of participants is limited and therefore early reservation is advisable.
Contribution towards expenses is 5 Euro per participant. Meeting point will be at 10 a.m. the unique Freiheitsbrunnen (Fountain of Liberty) in the middle of Homburgs pedestrian zone (corner Kaiserstraße/Eisenbahnstraße – opposite historical guesthouse Homburger Hof – between railway station and market place and only a few minutes away from several free parking-lots).

Wer weiß beispielsweise, dass ein unter anderem in Homburg angeworbenes, auf Seiten George Washingtons kämpfendes Freiwilligenregiment eine ents cheidende Rolle im Unabhängigkeitskrieg spielte und der “Held von Yorktown in Jägersburg aufwuchs? Wer kennt die Bezüge der nach Plänen Vaubans errichteten Großfestung “Homburg-la-Forteresse zu den US-Bundesstaaten Louisiana, Texas und Missouri, zu San Francisco und den “Original 13 oder hätte geahnt, dass Don Carlos Maria Weber, Gründer der kalifornischen Stadt Stockton, ein ausgewanderter Sohn des Homburger Dekans war?
Wer würde vermuten, dass das Alte Rathaus – heute Sitz der Stadtbücherei – im April 1945 als Titelbild des New York Times Magazine Berühmtheit erlangte und der legendäre “Achtundvierziger Carl Schurz – er diente den Präsidenten Lincoln und Hayes als General, Botschafter und “Secretary of the Interior – ebenfalls in Bezug zu Homburg steht?
